Profiteering Off Secret Nuclear War Planning in SC

November 19 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Nov. 19: Carolina Peace’s monthly meeting will feature Tom Clements, Director of Savannah River Site Watch. You may join in person at GROW or on Zoom. (Register below.)

Few in the public are now aware that a key facility to nuclear war preparation is right here in South Carolina – the high-security Savannah River Site (SRS) near Aiken, operated by the Department of Energy (the civilian near weapons department). The U.S. federal spending on the “defense” budget has reached about $1 trillion per year and over the next 20 years about $2 trillion will be spent on rebuilding the nuclear weapons production complex and on various new types of nuclear warheads and their components. To keep the U.S. on a footing to engage in full-scale nuclear war with Russia and China the DOE plans a on new nuclear bomb facility at SRS to produce the plutonium cores (“pits”) for new nuclear warheads. Meanwhile, SRS is drowning in highly radioactive nuclear waste – a by-product of weapons plutonium production at the site during the Cold War – which poses an extreme hazard to our state and must be urgently addressed. Come and learn how planning for the SRS Plutonium Bomb Plant by DOE and private contractors is sucking down almost $2 billion per year, in a rush to get the facility in operation with the goal to play a bigger role in the nuclear war profit machine.
